The National Bureau of Statistics of China has published major economic statistics for October 2009 and stated that China's retail sales increased by 16.2% year-on-year to CNY1.172 trillion.

Yu Deming, the director of the China Pharmaceutical Enterprises Association, stated at "The 4th Growing Pharmaceutical Enterprise Development Forum" that China's drug retail market reached CNY66 billion in the first half of 2009, an increase of 15.8% compared with the same period in 2008.

According to Beijing Statistics Bureau, as a result of stimulation by a series of domestic demand expanding and consumption promoting measures, Beijing's retail sales in the first quarter of 2009 reached CNY122.12 billion, an increase of 12.6% compared with the same period of last year.

According to statistics published by Beijing Committee of Commerce (the former Beijing Bureau of Commerce) during the five days around the Qing Ming Festival, 35 Beijing retailers realized total sales of CNY444 million, a year-on-year increase of 1.33%, and daily average sales of CNY88.88 million.

While most electronics companies are busily cutting staff, Chinese electronics retailer Gome has announced plans to hire 20,000 migrant workers for its four subsidiaries in China.

China's two dairy giants Bright Dairy and Yili have released their financial reports for the third quarter of 2008 and, being affected by the melamine scandal, each of the companies made net losses of over CNY200 million in Q3.
