China's Retail Sales Up 9% During May Day Holiday

According to the statistics provided by China's Ministry of Commerce, during the three-day May Day holiday retail sales of 1,000 major retailers in China reached CNY12 billion, a year-on-year increase of 9%.

Mofcom said robust sales were reported for gold, jewelry, home appliances, and automobiles because of the various promotions launched by retailers during the period. Meanwhile, the sales of food and clothing maintained stable growth.

Statistics show that the sales of gold and jewelry increased by 19.6% compared with the same period of last year; sales of home appliances increased by 11.4% with LCD TVs, air-conditioners, refrigerators, 3G mobile phones, and wireless netbooks in great demand; and the sales of automobiles increased by 9.2% year-on-year.

For the catering market, wedding receptions played an important role during the May Day holiday. In Tianjin, about 200 wedding receptions were hosted by star hotels. In Beijing, sales at time-honored restaurants such as Donglaishun and Quanjude increased of 49.1% and 37.5%, respectively.
