Although it entered the Chinese market 13 years ago, the development of South Korea's E-Mart has been slow. However, its newly appointed China president has stated that it will accelerate its expansion and will open 100 new stores by 2015.

According to Eric Legros, the president of Carrefour China, though business was affected by the riots of July 5, 2009, in Xinjiang, the company is confident about the market of Urumqi and plans to open two or three new supermarkets in the city in 2010.

The international environmental group Greenpeace has released its latest "Supermarket List for China" which shows that foreign-funded supermarkets such as Wal-Mart, Tesco, and Ito-Yokado rank at the bottom of the list in terms of green initiatives.

Chinese beverage manufacturer Nongfu Spring has disclosed to the local media that it is likely to suffer a loss of CNY1 billion as a result of reports of arsenic in certain of its soft drinks.

According to Eric Legros, the CEO of Carrefour China, the company plans to enhance purchase of agricultural products from Chongqing and the French retailer is expected to buy fruit and vegetables to a value of over CNY100 million in the city in 2010.

Carrefour has signed a new project with Hunter Real Estate, a local real estate company in Guiyang, marking the international retailer's entry into the capital of Guizhou province.
